Today’s cheapest plan for a typical family
Every night we cost the entire market for one fixed household and publish the result. No sign-up, no cherry-picking. The cheapest plan is named so you can check it yourself.
The household we test
2 adults + 2 kids, with rooftop solar. About 4,800 kWh bought from the grid a year and 2,000 kWh of solar exported (a 6.6 kW system, self-consuming most of what it makes). Time-of-use plans are costed on a 40/30/30 peak/shoulder/off-peak split. The same assumptions apply in every city, so the only thing that changes is local pricing.

- Whole of market. Every AER-listed retailer’s current plans, costed on their real rates: usage, supply charge, discounts and solar feed-in.
- No commissions. We take none, so nothing is pay-to-rank. The order is purely by what the household would actually pay.
- Only plans you can sign up for. Business tariffs, and offers restricted to seniors, members or third-party clubs, are excluded from the winner.
- Recalculated nightly. Last run 5 September 2026. The market moves, so the number does too.
We show the five genuinely competitive markets. Perth and Darwin are left out on purpose: WA and the NT aren’t on the national market, so households there can’t choose their retailer and there’s nothing honest to compare.
Live grid · NSW
Wind and solar farms are supplying 40% of the grid right now, about usual for this hour.
Lately the grid has averaged about 609 g CO₂e/kWh (AEMO CDEII).
Wind and solar farms as a share of scheduled generation, from AEMO. Rooftop solar and hydro aren’t counted, so the grid is greener than this figure alone suggests. This doesn’t change what you pay: your plan’s rates are fixed.
