How to upload a bill, and what we read from it

Which file to send, what gets extracted, and what happens to the document afterwards.

What to upload

The original PDF from your retailer is by far the best input. It is text-based, so every figure is read exactly as printed. Most retailers let you download it from their app or web portal, and many email it to you each cycle.

A clear photo or scan also works. If you are photographing a paper bill, get the whole page in frame, keep it flat, and make sure the charges table is in focus — that table is where the rates live.

You can upload several bills at once. Each is read separately and added to your usage history.

What we take off the bill

Billing period: The start and end dates, which set how many days the charges cover.
Usage: The kilowatt-hours you consumed — split into peak, shoulder and off-peak if you are on a time-of-use tariff.
Controlled load: Separately metered usage (often hot water) and its own rate, where your bill has one.
Rates: Your usage rate(s) in c/kWh and your daily supply charge in c/day.
Solar: How much you exported and the feed-in rate you were paid for it.
Bill total: The new charges for this period — not an account balance, and not an amount carried over from last time.
Location: Your postcode and distribution network, which decide which plans you can actually buy.

What happens to the document

The bill is read to extract those figures and is not retained afterwards. What is kept is the structured result — your usage, rates and period — because that is what the comparison runs on.

The reading is done by an AI model, which is disclosed at the point of upload and in the privacy policy. If you would rather not upload a document at all, you can enter your usage and rates by hand.

Always check the figures

After a bill is read, the extracted numbers are shown to you. Take ten seconds over them. Every dollar figure in the comparison is derived from these, so a misread rate produces a confident-looking but wrong recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Is my bill stored?

The document itself is not retained after it is read. The figures extracted from it are kept, because the comparison needs them.

Can I upload a gas bill?

Yes. Gas bills are detected automatically and compared against gas plans in the states where gas comparison is available.

What if I only have a paper bill?

A clear photo of the full page works. Keep the charges table sharp and in frame.
