  • Per year$1,679
  • Usage charges (quarter)$328
  • Supply charges (quarter)$91

Indicative, before discounts, solar or concessions. The rate and supply charge come from your plan — comparing plans on your real usage is how you lower both.

How it works

Every electricity bill is usage plus a daily supply charge

Usage charges

The power you actually use, in kilowatt-hours, multiplied by your plan's usage rate (c/kWh). Bigger households, pools, electric hot water and air con push this up fastest.

Supply charge

A fixed daily charge (c/day) you pay just to be connected, no matter how little you use. On a low-usage home it can be a surprisingly large share of the bill.

Where the saving is

A cheaper plan lowers both the usage rate and the daily supply charge. That's why comparing on your real usage often beats trying to switch off appliances one by one. Why bills climb.

Electricity bills — straight answers

How is an electricity bill calculated?

Your bill is two parts: usage (kWh used × your usage rate in c/kWh) plus a daily supply charge (c/day × days in the period) you pay just to be connected. The estimator adds both over a 91-day quarter and scales it to a year.

What is the average electricity bill in Australia?

It varies a lot by state and household size, but a typical family sits somewhere around $350–$500 a quarter before discounts, solar or concessions. Put your own household size and rate into the estimator above for a figure closer to you.

How many kWh does a household use per day?

Roughly 8 kWh/day for one person, scaling to 20–26 kWh for a large family — more with a pool, ducted air con or electric hot water. The estimator sets a starting figure by household size, which you can adjust.

What usage rate and supply charge should I use?

Both are printed on your bill. Usage rates are often 25–45 c/kWh and supply charges 80–130 c/day depending on your state and plan. If you don’t have a bill handy, the defaults are a reasonable Australian midpoint.

How can I lower my electricity bill?

Use less power and pay a lower rate for what you use. EnergySorted compares plans on your real usage to cut the c/kWh and daily supply charge behind every line of your bill — often the fastest saving without changing a thing at home.
